The FBI has issued a warning regarding fraudulent emails and messages falsely claiming to be from planning, zoning, or permitting offices.

Property owners, contractors, and developers may receive emails demanding payment for zoning permits, inspections, or compliance fees that appear official but are not legitimate.

What to Watch For

  • Emails requesting immediate payment for zoning or permit-related matters
  • Messages that threaten fines, penalties, or legal action if payment is not made
  • Requests for payment via wire transfer, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or third‑party payment apps
  • Email addresses or phone numbers that do not match official county contact information

Important Information

  • Cass County Zoning does NOT request payment via email or text message.
  • All official permits, fees, and applications are handled through authorized county systems and offices.
  • When in doubt, verify communications by contacting the Planning & Zoning Office directly using phone numbers or email addresses listed on this website.

What to Do If You Receive a Suspicious Message

  • Do not click links or open attachments
  • Do not send payment or personal information
  • Report the message to your local law enforcement agency or the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at https://www.ic3.gov
