Chief Mechanic at Weeping Water Shop
This is a management position responsible for skilled, mechanical maintenance and repair of the entire fleet of vehicles and equipment in the Roads Department.
Chief Mechanic must possess class A CDL.
Hours: 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Must be able to report to work outside of scheduled work hours for snow and other emergencies.

Job Description(s)
POSITION TITLE: Mechanic II
DEPARTMENT: Department of Roads
REPORTS TO: Highway Superintendent
PURPOSE OF POSITION: This is a management position responsible for skilled, mechanical maintenance and repair of the entire fleet of vehicles and equipment in the Roads Department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Performs general overhaul, repair and maintenance work to the entire fleet of vehicles and equipment of the Roads Department consisting of construction and maintenance equipment.
Plans, directs, assigns and supervises the work performed by the Mechanic I.
Inspects, diagnoses, repairs and install system and parts including, but not limited to electrical systems, hydraulic parts, transmissions, power trains, suspensions, gasoline or diesel engine parts and air-brake systems on all road maintenance equipment.
Performs maintenance and repairs on gas or diesel engines.
Overhauls heavy equipment engines based upon cost feasibility.
Performs routine maintenance including, but not limited to motor tune-ups and air-conditioner recharging.
Operates air-conditioning recycling equipment when repairing or recharging air conditioners.
Operates a welding unit when performing acetylene and electric arc welds on vehicles and equipment parts.
Operates a hydraulic press and power and hand tools in the performance of job duties.
Travels to various job sites to diagnose and repair equipment malfunctions.
Road tests equipment to locate defects and check repair work.
Completes various written work record including, but not limited to time sheets, sublet labor, equipment maintenance records and work orders.
Replaces straight, flat line glass on vehicles and construction equipment.
Paints vehicles and equipment after fabrication needs are met.
Responsible for ensuring the proper and safe performance of repair and maintenance activities on vehicles and equipment.
Maintain shop supply inventory; orders miscellaneous supplies as needed in accordance with established procedures. Pick up parts as needed.
Assist with the development of specifications for equipment purchase.
Ensures proper maintenance of tools and equipment by checking and cleaning after use.
Performs maintenance and housekeeping activities of county buildings and grounds.
Answers shop telephone, takes messages, refers callers to appropriate source for assistance or provides information to callers according to departmental procedures. Operates a two-way radio for communication with supervisors and equipment operators.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with the general public, governmental officials, supervisors and co-workers.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs duties as directed or as the situation dictates.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND ABILITY:
Knowledge of the operation of heavy construction equipment and the ability to overhaul and repair.
Knowledge of the standard practices, tool and equipment of the mechanic trade along with the ability to apply techniques in maintenance and repair duties.
Knowledge of and the ability to operate hand tools, power tools and general maintenance equipment in a safe manner.
Knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine systems and of mechanical repair of heavy trucks and construction equipment.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Knowledge of and/or the ability to learn the geography of the County.
Knowledge of and ability to perform routine maintenance and repairs on assigned vehicles and equipment.
Ability to plan, assign and direct the work of subordinates.
Ability to utilize sound independent judgement in the diagnosis and repair of road construction/maintenance machinery and equipment.
Ability to accurately perform mathematical calculations in the performance of job duties.
Ability to apply departmental policies and procedures in the performance of job duties.
Ability to accurately prepare and maintain various records, reports, and other departmental documents.
Ability to deal with the general public in a courteous and tactful manner.
Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, governmental officials, supervisors and co-workers.
ESSENTIAL EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND/OR LICENSES:
Must have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
Must have a valid driver's license at the time of hire and must obtain a Commercial Driver's License, class A within a time frame established by the employer and maintain it during the course of employment.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed indoors and occasionally outdoors and requires a considerable amount of physical activity, including walking, standing, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching, reaching overhead, stooping and climbing. The incumbent must have the ability to maneuver over rough terrain and construction sites on foot. Operation and maintenance of vehicles an equipment requires the incumbent be able to perform repetitive hand, wrist, shoulder and leg movements in tight and cramped spaces as well as bend, climb and crawl into, under and out of vehicles. Work duties may be performed in open and confined spaces. Duties also require the ability to tolerate a work environment that includes contact with dirt, dust, noise, poor lighting and inclement weather. The employee may be required to work in times of darkness, works near moving mechanical parts, and is exposed to fumes or toxic chemicals.
An incumbent is frequently required to lift and carry 25-50 pounds and is occasionally required to lift and carry 100 pounds. Vision abilities include close vision, distance, vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Noise level is usually moderate however, may be loud due to working near moving mechanical parts.
Work requires interaction with the general public at times and may be stressful when dealing with irate individuals or when meeting deadlines.
